Input Tax Credit (ITC) Reconciliation: How to Avoid GSTR-2B Mismatch Notices

For Indian businesses, Input Tax Credit (ITC) is pure cash. Every rupee of GST paid on vendor software, equipment, raw materials, or contractor invoices should offset the GST collected on client invoices. But claiming ITC without proper reconciliation has become a minefield of automated tax notices.

Why GSTR-2B is the final legal record for ITC

Unlike GSTR-2A (which is dynamic), GSTR-2B is a static statement generated on the 14th of every month. Under Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act, you can ONLY claim ITC on invoices that are uploaded by your vendor in their GSTR-1 and reflected in your GSTR-2B.

If your vendor delays filing their return, your business must pay that tax out of pocket in cash on GSTR-3B, directly draining working capital.

The 3 most common causes of ITC loss

1. Wrong GSTIN: The vendor made a single-digit typo in your 15-character GSTIN, attributing the tax to another company.

2. B2C tagging: The vendor filed the invoice as an unregistered consumer instead of a B2B sale.

3. Place of Supply error: The vendor charged CGST/SGST instead of IGST, preventing you from offsetting liability in your state.
